Ghana’s most treasured musical identity, Highlife, turns 100 this year, and what better way to honor this living legacy than through a concert that embodies its soul? On Tuesday, 11th November 2025, the Efua T. Sutherland Drama Studio at the University of Ghana, Legon, will come alive with rhythm, poetry, and nostalgia as Kwame Brenya and Akɔm Band host the third edition of their annual musical and poetry celebration—AKƆMCERT 3.0, themed “HIGHLIFE IS ALIVE.”
This year’s event marks a cultural milestone. One hundred years of Highlife music is not just a centenary of melodies but a century of Ghanaian identity expressed through sound. From the palmwine strums of Jacob Sam and E.T. Mensah’s dance-band era to the soulful harmonies of Amakye Dede and Daddy Lumba, Highlife has carried Ghana’s joys, struggles, and aspirations across generations. It is the music that shaped our parties, our politics, our love stories, and our memories—and AKƆMCERT 3.0 aims to relight that flame.
The night will blend live music and spoken word in a uniquely Ghanaian fashion. Kwame Brenya, known for his culturally rooted poetry and stagecraft, will lead the charge alongside the dynamic Akɔm Band, who have earned praise for their authentic instrumentation and fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds. Together, they promise a sonic journey through Ghana’s musical past, present, and future.
Joining them on stage are some of the most vibrant names in today’s music scene. Fameye, whose heartfelt lyrics and Highlife-inspired melodies have earned him nationwide affection, will grace the night. Also performing are the ever-energetic Nkyinkyim Band, the soulful Rama Blak, and the melodious Megborna, each bringing their own interpretation of Highlife’s evolving voice.
More than a concert, AKƆMCERT 3.0 is a statement—a reminder that Highlife is not a relic of the past but a living rhythm that continues to inspire. The event invites music lovers, students, and culture enthusiasts to come dressed in pride, ready to dance, reflect, and reconnect with Ghana’s musical roots.
